2013년 12월 1일은 대림절(Advent)의 첫 날입니다.
캐톨릭 교회 달력에 근거하면 대림절 첫날이자 일요일이 새해의 첫날로 정해져 있습니다.
대림절은 크리스마스 날까지 4주간 계속되는데, 올해는 12월 1일부터 12월 24일까지 계속됩니다.
대림절을 나타내는 Advent 라는 말의 어원은
라틴어 Adventus 에서 나왔으며 이 단어의 뜻은 "오심" 혹은 "도착"입니다.
로마제국 시대에는 이 말을 왕, 황제처럼 중요하고 막대한 힘을 가진 사람들이 올때 쓰여졌고,
크리스찬에게는 왕중의 왕이신 예수 그리스도님의 탄생을 인내를 가지고 기다리는 시기를 일컫습니다.
대림절 기간중에 다양한 풍습과 전통이 전해져 내려오는데,
그중에서도 가장 대펴적인 것은 대림초(Advent Candles), 대림환(Advent Wreath)과
대림절 달력(Advent Calendar)을 꼽을 수 있습니다.
대림초와 대림환의 유래는 그리스도교가 퍼지기 전 동유럽 지역에 살던 게르만족들이
낮길이는 점점 짧아지면서 추워지는 12월에 상록수와 칩엽수 가지들을 모아서
길고 추운 겨울밤에 온기와 빛을 얻기 위하기도 하고,
아울러 따스한 봄이 빨리 오기를 기대하는 맘으로
자주 커다랗게 모닥불을 피우는 전통에서 유래되었다고 봅니다.
그리스도교가 독일지역으로 퍼진 후에도 이 오래된 풍습이 크리스마스 절기와 겹치면서
서서히 상록수 가지를 태우는 대신에 상록수 가지로 환을 만들어서
대림초에 불을 붙이면서 영원한 빛을 상징하는 아기 예수님의 오심을 준비하고
기쁜 마음으로 기다리는 풍습으로 자리잡게 되었습니다.
대림절 기간동안 교회나 가정집에서 대림환을 직접 만들거나 가게에서 사서 준비하는데
대림환은 우선 상록수의 가지로 둥글게 만들어서그 가운데에 다섯개의 초를 꼽아 둡니다.
다섯개의 초 중에 네개는 대림환의 가장자리에 둥글게 놓아 두고,
대림절부터 크리스마스 날까지 4주동안 일주일에 하나씩 매일 저녁에 불을 붙입니다.
나머지 하나는 한가운데에 놓여지고, 크리스마스 날을 위한 초입니다.
네개의 초들의 색깔은 주로 보라색이며 한주가 지날 때마다 색이 조금씩 밝아져서
핑크에 가까워지기도 하고, 다 같은 색의 보라색이기도 합니다.
보라색의 의미는 회개와 반성을 핑크는 기쁨을 상징합니다.
한편, 크리스마스 날을 위한 초는 하얀색으로 커다란 원통의 모양을 가진 초가 사용되며
그리스도의 초라고 불리우며 크리스마스 날에 초를 밝힙니다.
대림절 기간동안 촛불을 켜 놓고 이 시기에 알맞는 성경 구절을 읽기도 하고
가족이 함께 가족기도를 바치기도 하고, 크리스마스 캐롤을 함께 부릅니다.
첫번째 대림초
대림절 첫번째 초는 예언의 초 불리워지는데,
그 이유는 이 초는 예언자들을 통해서 하느님의 메시지와 약속을 상징하는데,
이미 예언자들이 구세주인 그리스도의 탄생을 예고했기 때문이다.
한편 첫번째 초는 그리스도 안에서의 소망과 희망을 상징하기에 희망의 초라고도 불리웁니다.
어제는 미국의 추수감사절이 끝난 다음날인 Black Friday 가 예년처럼 다가와서
정식으로 본격적인 크리스마스 쇼핑이 시작되었는데,
종교적인 명절인 크리스마스가 점점 상업적인 빌미로 쓰여져서 한심하기도 하고,걱정이 앞 서기는 하지만,
일년을 마무리하면서, 가족과 지인들에게 감사의 표시를 할 수 있는 자체는 아주 좋은 풍습이기에,
올 한해도 여느해처럼 대림절을 맞이해서 대림초를 상에 준비하고, 대림달력을 벽에 걸어두는 한편,
크리스마스 선물 리스트와 카드 리스트를 프린트해서 올 크리스마스에 준비하고 계획 하면서
이 기쁜 절기를 시작해 봅니다.
